I'm Vanessa Rodriguez
Nice to meet you!
I have been drawing for over 25 years. In particular, I have always had a fascination with the details and expressions found in a face. It never bores me and I’m constantly looking for new faces to put down on paper. I am mainly self-taught from books, experience, and practice over the years, with some time spent furthering my development at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia. I am always working at developing my skills across various mediums however, it’s safe to say that a ballpoint pen and graphite pencil are very high on my list of favourites!
Being a big film buff I am very often inspired to pick up a pen or pencil by some awesome movie or a character that I fall in love with but I try not to limit myself too much with my subject matter. I’m simply drawn to anything I find visually interesting and when I do, I will want to recreate it as a piece of art. Drawing makes me smile and if sharing my art inspires creativity in just one other person, I believe I have succeeded as an artist.
A tattooist, though I consider myself an artist first, and I work hard every day to bring those two passions together.
I got my first tattoo in 1999 at the age of 19 and instantly fell in love with the tattoo culture. Eight years later, in 2007, I did a handful of small tattoos on some willing family and friends. Although that gave me a very small taste of what tattooing would be like, and I really liked it, I didn’t actively pursue an apprenticeship until I had spent time further developing my art and drawing skills first.
I truly believe that tattooing is one of the most intimate artforms created, where clients trust you to mark their skin forever, so I wanted to make sure that I did everything I needed to be as artistically prepared as possible before committing myself to the industry. Over the years I’ve definitely seen a massive shift in tattoos being seen and worn as pieces of art and I absolutely love being a part of it all today.
I started my tattoo apprenticeship in February of 2010 at Wicked Ink in Sydney Australia and have been tattooing full time since November 2010. Along the way, I have looked up to and admired so many different professionals and I feel grateful every day that I came into the industry when I did.
The work ethic, skill, and knowledge of the artists that I look up to inspire me on a daily basis to push my boundaries and never stop learning. To never stop getting better!
Closer to home, I will forever credit the skills and teachings of Rosco Diessel as the artist that helped me reach my goal of becoming a tattoo artist. My mentor and my friend…may he rest in peace always, creating beautiful art out there in the universe somewhere!
In August 2015, I opened my own private studio in Sydney, Australia. I wanted to create a private space where every single person that gave me the honour of marking their skin could feel “at home” and completely comfortable throughout the entire experience. I work hard every day to maintain that standard in my place of business and hope that every single person that interacts with my art feels that energy from me.
I feel privileged and honoured every time that I am chosen to mark someone permanently and I believe it is my duty as a professional to give each and every client the very best work and experience that I can, every single time.
On a more personal note, I am just a big nerd who likes the simple things in life! My partner and my family are my number one priority always (and that includes a couple of furry kids of course!). Without them, I would have nothing.
I value wellness. I prioritise taking care of my physical/mental health and wellbeing as it can impact my stamina when tattooing and my mental clarity when creating art. The hard work of early morning gym sessions, lifting heavy bars or time spent with my gymnastics coaches doing handstands…rewards me in so many ways but ultimately I am the happiest human when upside down. I believe in going after the things you want, in taking risks, in fighting for what you believe in and in creating the life you want to live… I want to see the world and one day when I look back on it all, I want to say “I have no regrets!”
Thank you for being apart of my journey.
